Book nowWhat is a bichectomy (cheek reduction)?
A bichectomy is a surgical procedure in which the so-called “Bichat's fat pads” are surgically removed. These fat pads are located in the cheeks and contribute to facial volume. With a bichectomy, a slender V-shaped face can be achieved. If you feel that your cheeks are too round or too full and you would like a slimmer face, a bichectomy may be a suitable procedure for you to fulfill these wishes. If you feel uncomfortable with your “chubby cheeks” or “hamster cheeks”, please make an appointment with us and let us advise you in detail on how to solve the problem.
Who is a bichectomy suitable for and what alternatives are there?
A bichectomy may be the right procedure for you if you feel your cheeks are too round or too voluminous and you desire a slimmer and more contoured face. Reducing the fullness of the cheeks can help to achieve a more harmonious facial profile. The procedure can also remedy classic “chubby cheeks” or “hamster cheeks”. The result is a V-shaped face that many people find attractive.
Alternatives to bichectomy can vary depending on individual needs and goals. Minimally invasive procedures such as injections with botulinum toxin A or hyaluronic acid are recommended to change the facial profile or to emphasize or smooth certain areas. Liposuction may be an option for people who want a general reduction in facial fat tissue. However, this is a surgical procedure in which fat is suctioned out and the results are therefore not as targeted as with a bichectomy. Another alternative to enhance facial contours is a very natural way and involves adjusting your diet and losing weight.
Dr. Anna Lukyanova will be happy to advise you personally at our consultation in Düsseldorf. Together we will work out the optimal treatment strategy to meet your needs.
What is the procedure for a bichectomy?
Bichectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed under local or general anesthesia. The choice of anesthesia depends on the patient's preference and the extent of the planned bichectomy. During the operation, a small incision is made in the oral mucosa on the inside of the cheek. This incision provides access to the Bichat fat pads. The fat pads are carefully removed while protecting nearby vessels and nerves. Once the fat pads have been removed, the incisions are carefully sutured. As the incisions are inside the mouth, the scars are usually not visible. After the procedure, the patient can stay in the clinic for a few hours or go home immediately, depending on whether general anesthesia was used. However, the patient should not actively participate in road traffic on the day of the operation.
Risks and side effects of buccal fat removal
Bichectomy is a comparatively safe procedure, but as with any surgical intervention, there are certain risks and potential side effects that should be considered.
Swelling and bruising may occur immediately after the operation. These are usually temporary and will subside within a few days to weeks. Numbness or sensory disturbances are also possible side effects and usually normalize over time. Of course, general surgical risks such as bleeding, allergies, thromboembolism or infections cannot be ruled out. However, all possible precautions are taken to prevent their occurrence. With regard to the optical risks, it is important to mention that there is always the possibility of achieving a less than perfectly symmetrical result. With regard to scarring, it is advantageous that the incisions are made in the oral mucosa and the scars are therefore not normally visible and the visual result is not affected. To ensure that the risks and side effects can be minimized on our part, Dr Anna Lukyanova will discuss all relevant details with you to achieve the best possible result for you.
