Book nowSweating is a thing of the past: our Botox treatment
Hyperhidrosis is a medical term for excessive sweating. It is a disordered regulation in which the body's sweat glands are excessively active. The causes are not always known, but genetic factors and overactivity of the autonomic nervous system or secondary factors such as hormonal disorders or medication can lead to the symptoms. An estimated 2.5% of the population suffer from hyperhidrosis. Due to the heavy, uncontrollable sweating, which can soak clothing and lead to social and occupational impairment, affected patients experience an enormous reduction in their quality of life. Botulinum toxin A injections are one of the most effective methods for reducing excessive sweating. Under the experienced guidance of Dr Anna Lukyanova, we use botulinum toxin A in a targeted manner to reduce sweat production and give you a self-confident attitude to life.
Botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis - how do we stop excessive sweating?
Botulinum toxin A, the main component of Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis, reversibly blocks the signals of the autonomic nervous system that are responsible for sweat production. The sweat glands are thus chemically denervated. Targeted injections into the regions of the sweat glands (palms, armpits or soles of the feet) temporarily inactivate them, which leads to a reduction in sweat production. The effect of botulinum toxin is temporary (approx. 4-6 months) and requires regular top-up treatments. Patients usually come to our practice 1-2 times a year for refresher treatments. However, the frequency of therapeutic visits is individual and depends on the severity of the condition, the dose administered per session and the patient's subjective level of suffering.
Your solution to excessive sweating: When is Botox® used?
Treatment with botulinum toxin A can be used to treat hyperhidrosis for certain indications. One indication is excessive, uncontrolled, focal (localised) sweating that exceeds normal levels and does not respond to conventional deodorants. This is often associated with a considerable impairment of quality of life in social, professional and personal areas, which is why treatment with Botox® is indicated. Botulinum toxin A can also be an alternative if conservative treatment with antiperspirants, oral medication or iontophoretic therapy has been unsuccessful and the desired effect has not been achieved. Treatment with botulinum toxin A is the best-studied therapy for focal or localised hyperhidrosis, i.e. hyperhidrosis in specific, defined areas of the body (hands, feet and armpits). It must be distinguished from generalised hyperhidrosis of the entire body or hemihyperhidrosis, which only occurs on one side of the body/face.
What contraindications does botulinum toxin A have?
Before we can start Botox® therapy on you, we must ensure that you do not fulfil any of these exclusion criteria. The absolute contraindications include
- Neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Inflammation at the injection sites
- Proven hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Coagulopathies (coagulation disorders) and the use of anticoagulants (anticoagulants) are regarded as relative contraindications. Treatment can nevertheless be carried out in this case after appropriate counselling.
Your path to hyperhidrosis therapy - procedure and risks
Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis is an outpatient procedure in which botulinum toxin A is carefully injected into the affected areas. The treatment is generally safe and well tolerated. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. Temporary side effects may include pain and discomfort during the injection, bruising and swelling or muscle fatigue/weakness. This can lead to a temporary weakening of the hand muscles in the area of the hands. In precision engineering professions, the area at risk can therefore be specifically avoided. It is also important to mention that not every patient responds equally well to the therapy and the desired effect may not always be achieved. For this reason, a personal consultation before the start of treatment is extremely important to us, in which your questions and wishes are answered in detail.
