Botox treatment for migraine therapy offers people who suffer from chronic migraines a promising opportunity to improve their quality of life. Migraines are one of the most common neurological disorders and around 1-2% of the population suffer from the chronic form of migraine. This form is characterised by a particular impairment in everyday life and an associated reduction in quality of life. Botulinum toxin A has specific proof of efficacy for the treatment of chronic migraine and has therefore been authorised for treatment in Germany since 2011. Under the expert guidance of Dr Anna Lukyanova, it is used specifically to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks in chronic migraine patients.
The mode of action of botulinum toxin against migraines
The exact mode of action of Botox® Migraine is still part of current research. However, there is some good scientific evidence as to why Botox relieves the symptoms and frequency of attacks in chronic migraine. Firstly, Botox® blocks the release of a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction, resulting in relaxation of the injected head, neck and throat muscles. Muscle tension and stiffness are migraine triggers and are reduced by Botox® therapy. Furthermore, Botox® could have an effect on pain processing by inhibiting the release of pain-promoting neurotransmitters. In addition, some studies suggest that Botox may have a positive effect on the dysfunctional muscle activity of blood vessels during a migraine attack. It is important to note that the effect of Botox® in migraine treatment varies from person to person. Efficacy is assessed over time and treatment is adjusted accordingly.
The effect of botulinum toxin is temporary and requires regular top-up treatments to achieve the best results. The effect of the initial treatment usually lasts for 3 months. Our patients then visit us every 3-5 months to continue the Botox therapy. After successful treatment in the 1st year, the treatment interval can be extended to 4 months.
Beating migraines: Where can Botox® help you?
If certain indications or criteria are met, Botox® therapy can be used to treat migraines. The main indication for its use is chronic migraine. This is defined as a migraine in which headaches are present on 15 or more days per month, of which at least 8 are migraine-like headaches. This constellation of symptoms must have been present for at least 3 months to be considered a chronic migraine. In addition, Botox® is often considered in cases of failure, insufficient effect or intolerance of other therapies, such as medication. Other indications are frequent migraine attacks with a severe impact on quality of life or if the head and neck muscles can be identified as the migraine trigger. Treatment with botulinum toxin A can also be considered if migraine attacks significantly impair the quality of life, even if they do not necessarily occur frequently. We will be happy to advise you at our practice in Düsseldorf as to whether Botox® treatment is indicated and should be carried out in your case.
What contraindications does botulinum toxin A have?
Before we can start Botox® therapy on you, we must ensure that you do not fulfil any of these exclusion criteria. The absolute contraindications include
- Neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Inflammation at the injection sites
- Proven hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Coagulopathies (coagulation disorders) and the use of anticoagulants (anticoagulants) are regarded as relative contraindications. Treatment can nevertheless be carried out in this case after appropriate counselling.
Pain-free life with minimal risks: Your path to migraine relief
Botox treatment for migraines is an outpatient procedure that usually only takes a few minutes. Dr Lukyanova, MD, will inject the botulinum toxin into the affected muscle groups, usually the head, throat and neck muscles. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. The treatment is generally safe and well tolerated. Most side effects are mild and temporary. These include pain and discomfort at the injection site, mild and transient headaches or, in rare cases, muscle weakness in the under-injected areas. Although allergic reactions to Boto® are rare, they can occur. However, it is important to note that with Botox® therapy, a low risk is associated with a significant improvement rate. Nevertheless, the success of the treatment cannot be guaranteed for the patient. Therefore, after three therapy attempts without the desired relief of symptoms, further Botox® treatment is not recommended.
